In Marawood-South softball on Thursday, Edgar gave Marathon all they could hand for the second time this week but the Red Raiders were able to to pull off a hard fought 6-5 win.
Marathon jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning when Danica Staus doubled home Brinly Stencil and Mayven Schneider, both of whom had singled. Edgar came back in the top of the 2nd inning with three runs to take the lead. Tenley Mauer had an RBI single as part of the rally.
Marathon would regain the lead in the bottom of the 3rd inning on two out RBI hits by Ripley Skrzypchak and Allison Podjaski and it was 5-3 Marathon. Edgar would score on an error in the top of the 5th to pull within 5-4 but the Raiders would reestablish a two run lead at 6-4 on a Mylee Haehlke home run over the center field fence. That would turn out to be a big run as Edgar would score on a Isabella Kaiser double in the 7th to move back within 1 at 6-5. With the tying run on 2nd base, Podjaski would strike out Brandi Halvorsen to end the game.
With the win Marathon is now 17-4 overall and 8-2 in the Marawood-South. Marathon moved to within one game of 1st place Auburndale, who lost Thursday for the first time in league play this season, 6-4 to Stratford.
Also in the Marawood-South it was Newman Catholic falling to Assumption 11-1 on Thursday. The Cardinals got an RBI single from Maddie Jankowski but couldn't overcome the Royals. Brianna Schulz, Lauren Thiel and Anna Carlson also had hits for Newman.
