The D.C. Everest softball team saw a lead slip away Thursday night vs. Wisconsin Rapids but got a reprieve with a game-tying home run from Aubrey Klatt in the 8th and a game winning RBI double from Ailsa Chmielewski in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat Wisconsin Rapids 8-7.
Everest led 6-2 after 4 innings with the big blow being a 3-run homer by Piper Schulz in the 4th. However, Rapids would rally with 4 runs in the top of the 5th to tie the score at 6. It would stay that way until the top of the 8th inning when the Red Raiders would take their first lead of the game on a wild pitch with two out.
In the bottom of the 8th, with one out, Klatt would drive a pitch over the center field fence to keep the Evergreens alive and tie the game at 7. Everest would almost win the game in that inning. Allison Blarek would follow the homer with a single. Mara Meverden would then double to center and Blarek would try to score all the way from first but be thrown out at the plate. There were some nervous moments as Blarek was injured on the play and down for a number of minutes before slowly walking off the field.
Everest would hold the Raiders in the top of the 9th and Ava Hahn would start the bottom of the inning with a single. She was sacrificed to 2nd and Chmielewski would walk it off with an RBI double to give the Evergreens the thrilling win. Everest moves back over .500 in the WVC at 5-4 and is 13-10 overall. Rapids drops to 3-6 in the league with the loss.
