The Stevens Point baseball team entered Wednesday with a one game lead over D.C. Everest in the Wisconsin Valley Conference. The Panthers came to Simon Field for the completion of a suspended game followed by a rain make up so the Evergreens had a chance to end the day in first place in the WVC. However, it was SPASH who traveled home with a three game lead after winning both games. The Panthers took the suspended game 13-6 and then the 2nd game 14-2.
The suspended game restarted in the bottom of the 3rd inning tied at 3. Everest took the lead with a pair of runs in the 4th. Hayden Grezenski hit an RBI double to give Everest the edge and then scored on a 3rd strike passed ball to make it 5-3. However, it was all Stevens Point after that as the Panthers 4 runs in both the 5th and 6th innings and two more in the 7th to pull away for the win. It was a tough game in the field for Everest as the Evergreens started the suspended game with 4 errors and added 5 more the rest of the way for a total of 9 in the game.
Stevens Point maintained the momentum in the second game, scoring three times in the top of the 1st inning to take the lead. Jonathan Trelka singled home one run and Gavin Thiel added a 2 run single in the inning. Aiden Haupt had an RBI single in the 3rd to get the Evergreens on the board. At that point it was 3-1 and Everest had the bases loaded with 1 out but Darren Grabski got out of further trouble by inducing a ground ball double play to end the inning.
SPASH would push their lead to 5-1 in the top of the 4th when Trelka drove in two more runs with a double. The Panthers would then put up 9 runs in the top of the 6th inning to put the game away and improve to 9-1 in the Wisconsin Valley Conference to move three games ahead of both Everest and Marshfield with five league games remaining.
Everest travels to Marshfield on Thursday while Stevens Point will play at Wausau West in a game that will be broadcast live on the Wausau Area Sports YouTube channel starting with the pregame at 4:45 pm and the first pitch at 5 pm.
