Softball: Meverden goes deep to help D.C. Everest to lead over Wausau West before the rains come and suspend game in the 5th.

The Division 1 softball regional semifinal between Wausau West and D.C. Everest started Tuesday but will finish Wednesday after the rain and thunderstorms arrived in the 5th inning with the Evergreens leading the Warriors 5-0. The game was suspended and will resume Wednesday afternoon.

Up until the rains came, Everest was continuing their domination of West. The Warriors haven't beaten DCE since the 2010 Division 1 playoffs and are hoping history would repeat itself as Everest, like this season, had beaten West twice during that regular season. The Warriors had a chance to get off to a good start in the top of the 1st inning as Breanne Bushong was walked to lead off and was followed by a single by Jaidyn Oelke to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Piper Schulz got Taylor Deffner to fly out to center field and that was followed by a big early turning point as Jaidyn Calmes hit a rocket down the third base line that was grabbed by Mara Meverden, who doubled up Oelke at first to keep the Warriors off the board.

Everest then came up in the bottom of the 1st and put three runs on the board after two were out. The third Everest hitter, Mara Meverden, drilled a fly ball over the left field fence to put Everest on the board. Piper Schulz and Maddie Hoppe followed with singles with each runner advancing an extra base on the throw to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. Kilynn Wright then came to the plate and the Warriors tried to pick off the runner at third but the throw got away and it was 2-0. Wright then looped a single to right center that scored Hoppe to make it 3-0.

After Piper Schulz set the Warriors down in order in both the 2nd and 3rd innings Everest would add a pair of runs in the bottom of the 3rd on an RBI single by Hoppe and a steal of home by Maryin Schemmel to put DCE up 5-0. West would put runners on the corners with one out in the top of the 4th after a walk to Deffner and a Jaidyn Calmes single but couldn't score.

After Everest went down in order in the 4th, Schulz retired the first two batters in the West 5th when the rains came. The game was unable to be restarted and will resume at 2:30 pm Wednesday at D.C. Everest.
