It's been a long time since the Wausau West softball team has defeated D.C. Everest. On June 3rd, 2010 the Warriors beat the Evergreens 10-9 in a WIAA regional final. Since then, Everest had beaten West 31 consecutive times heading to Thursday's Wisconsin Valley Conference game. For 5 innings it looked like that long streak would come to an end. However, after trailing 4-1 heading into the top of the 6th, the Evergreens sent 12 batters to the plate and scored 8 runs to take the lead for good in a 9-6 victory over West.
Everest took a 1-0 in the top of the 1st on a RBI single by Piper Schulz. However,
West responded in the bottom of the inning on a run-scoring single by Jaidyn Calmes to make it 1-1. West would take the lead with a 3 run bottom of the 3rd. Taylor Murkowski had a 2 RBI single and a Claire Schultz single led to the 3rd run to make it 4-1.
It would stay that way until the 6th. West had chances to extend their lead but stranded runners on 2nd and 3rd in both the 4th and 5th innings. The Evergreens would score 8 runs on 7 hits in the 6th, including an RBI single by Kilynn Wright, a 2 RBI double by Ava Hahn, a 2 RBI single by Aubrey Klatt, and RBI singles by Ailsa Chmielewski and Mara Meverden to make it 9-4.
The Warriors would try to comeback in the bottom of the 7th after two were out. Claire Schultz would single for her third hit of the game followed by an error by the Evergreens to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Nora Hintz would then drive a double to the fence in center field to score 2 runs and make it 9-6. However, Piper Schulz would strike out Jenna Graveen to finish off her complete game and the Everest win.
Aubrey Klatt and Kilynn Wright would each have three hits for the Evergreens while Schultz and Jaidyn Oelke would each have three hits for the Warriors. Everest is now 5-2 overall and 1-1 in the WVC while West drops to 4-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
