Friday softball roundup: DCE rallies, Marathon opens new home with win plus West and East head to Menomonie triangular and Newman faces hot hitting Athens.

After a rough start, the D.C. Everest softball team came roaring back to beat Hudson 12-7 on Friday. Hudson scored three runs in each of the first two innings and led 7-2 heading into the bottom of the 4th inning when the Evergreens turned the game around. Everest scored five runs in the bottom of the 4th to tie it up at 7 and then five more runs in the sixth to win it. Madelyn Hoppe sparked the DCE comeback with a two-run homer to make it 7-4 in the fourth. Allison Blarek added a two-run double in that frame as well and later scored on a passed ball to tie the game up. Aubrey Klatt gave Everest their first lead on an RBI single in the sixth with Piper Schulz adding a 2 run double and Hoppe an RBI single. Both Schulz and Hoppe finished the game 2 for 4 with 3 RBI for the Evergreens.
The Marathon softball team opened play at the new County Materials Sports Complex with a 11-1 win over Chequamegon. Marathon took charge with a 6 run bottom of the 2nd inning. Allison Podjaski got Marathon on the board with an RBI single. A pair of bases loaded walks and a hit batter with the bases loaded made it 4-0 before Danica Staus would hit a 2 run double to finish the six run frame. Rehgan Martin would add a pair of RBI singles in the 4th and 6th innings for Marathon and Mylee Haehlke would finish it off with a 2-run double in the bottom of the 6th. Tyla Beilke-Seubert would toss a no-hitter in the circle for Marathon, allowing just an unearned run while striking out 11 and walking 4. Marathon is now 4-1 and will travel to Phillips on Tuesday.
Wausau West is now 4-4 on the season after losing twice at the Menomonie triangular on Friday. In the first game, West fell to Eau Claire North 8-4. Jaidyn Calmes had a good game at the plate with 2 hits and 3 RBI. In the 2nd game, West led Menomonie 2-0 but the Mustangs scored six times in the bottom of the 2nd inning and went on to win 9-2. The Warriors scored both their runs in the 1st inning as Taylor Deffner singled in Breanne Bushong to make it 1-0. Deffner then stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error before scoring on a passed ball. The Warriors will open Wisconsin Valley Conference play on Tuesday at Wisconsin Rapids that will air live on the Wausau Area Sports YouTube channel.
Wausau East was also at the Menomonie triangular, and like West, lost to Menomonie and Eau Claire North. The Lumberjacks fell to Menomonie 16-3 in the opener as the Mustangs blew the game open with a 8 run bottom of the fourth. Everly Jirgl was 1 for 2 with a pair of RBI and Evelyn Thome also had a hit and RBI for East. In the second game, the Lumberjacks fell to Eau Claire North 11-0. East was held to two hits in the game as Carlie Kluz was 1 for 2 and Claire Gille also was 1 for 2. East is back in action on Monday at home vs. Crandon.
Newman Catholic falls to 1-1 after losing to Athens 16-5. The Bluejays scored 2 runs in each of the first three innings to lead 6-0. Newman cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth as Molly Merrill singled in the first Cardinal run followed by a 2 run single by Lauren Thiel to make it 6-3. However, Athens came right back and scored 8 times in the top of the 5th to lead 14-3. Newman kept the game alive by scoring two times in the bottom of the inning after two were out. Madison Keene singled followed by a 2-run home run by Molly Merrill. Merrill finished 2 for 3 with 3 RBI while Keene was also 2 for 3 for Newman. Athens had four different players with four hits apiece. Karly Eckert, Jaelin Switlick, Brinley Kornack, and Kenzie Woller each had big days for Athens. Newman will host Auburndale in the Marawood-South opener on Tuesday.
