Baseball: Rye, Winter lead Wausau Post 10 American Legion team to season-opening win at Wisconsin Rapids

The high school baseball seasons ended for the Wausau schools on Tuesday and it didn't take long for some of the players to get back on the field with the start of the 2026 American Legion campaign on Thursday night. Wausau Post 10 started the season with a 2-1 win at Wisconsin Rapids in 8 innings.

Wausau East baseball representatives Davis Winter and Cam Rye paced the Bulldogs as Winter tossed a complete game while allowing just a single run in the first inning. Winter gave up 4 hits in the game while walking 1 and striking out 7. Rye was not retired at the plate, going 3 for 3 with a walk. Maddox Hurtis added 2 hits for Post 10.

After Wisconsin Rapids scored their only run in the 1st, Wausau got even in the 4th when Rye singled with one out, advanced to 3rd on an error and scored on a ground ball. Post 10 pushed the winning run across in the top of the 8th as Rye again singled with one out followed by a walk to James Dennis. Breck Blaubach was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Mike Worzalla drove in Rye with a sacrifice fly.

Winter then put down Rapids in order in the bottom of the 8th to close out the win. Wausau Post 10 will return to action on Monday when they host Wisconsin Rapids in a doubleheader at Athletic Park.
