Softball: Playoff brackets for Divisions 2 through 5 announced with area teams knowing their road to Madison

Playoff brackets for Divisions 2, 3, 4 and 5 have been released by the WIAA for the softball tournament that starts as early as this Thursday for some teams. Division 1 seeds and brackets will be determined at meetings this week.
Marathon has received a #1 seed in Division 4. The Red Raiders, 19-5 overall and in 2nd place behind Auburndale in the Marawood-South, will open postseason play next Tuesday, May 26th at home vs. the winner of this Thursday's game between 9th seeded Spencer and #8 Wabeno-Laona. Also in that part of the bracket, Edgar is seeded 4th and will host #5 Three Lakes/Phelps next Tuesday in a regional semifinal. Should both Marathon and Edgar win at home next Tuesday they would meet in a regional final on Thursday, May 28th.

In Division 2, Mosinee is ranked 2nd in the state in the MaxPreps.com rankings but are just a #2 seed in their regional bracket. That's because Great Northern Conference rival and state #1 Medford in also in that bracket. By a quirk in the schedule, Mosinee hosts Medford today in GNC action but it won't have any impact on the seeds. Medford edged Mosinee by 1 run earlier in the season. Mosinee will host GNC rival and 7th seed Lakeland in a regional semifinal next Tuesday. A win would place Mosinee in the regional final against either third seed Antigo and 6th seeded Rhinelander. Medford will host the winner of Thursday's game between #9 Colby/Abbotsford or #8 Ashland. Merrill is seeded 4th in the bracket and will be home against 5th seeded Hayward next Tuesday. Should the bracket hold, Medford and Mosinee would face off in the sectional semifinals on June 2nd.
In Division 5, Newman Catholic is seeded 5th and will travel to 4th seeded Niagara next Tuesday, May 26th. A win would place the Cardinals in a regional final against either top seeded Athens or 8th seeded Owen-Withee. Also in that regional bracket, Northland Lutheran is seeded 7th and will play at 2nd seed Rib Lake in the regional semifinal. The winner of that game will move forward to play the winner of 3rd seeded Florence of #6 Elcho.
