Girls tennis: Newman's Herdrich wins one match at D-2 state tourney while three D.C. Everest players also represent the area.

The WIAA State Girl's Tennis Tournament was held this weekend at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison with D.C. Everest's Doubles team of Brynn Kampmann and Athena Thor and the Evergreens' singles' performer Mikaela Hawley in the D-1 event while Newman Catholic's Evelyn Herdrich was in the Division 2 singles' tourney.
Herdrich, a senior, was able to win her first match on Thursday when she defeated Adrijana Romanovic of Kenosha St. Joseph in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. On Friday Herdrich met the 6th seed Annabelle Parker of Big Foot and fell 6-1, 6-1. Parker would go on to finish 5th in the singles tournament.
In the D-1 singles tournament, the Everest sophomore Hawley lost in straight sets to Yustinia Haberkorn-Rudnitzky of Verona 6-3, 6-0. The DCE doubles' team of the senior Kampmann and the junior Thor played a thriller against the 15th seeded team of Anna Malinsky and Miah Wong of Westosha Central. Malinsky/Wong took the first set 6-4 but Kampmann and Thor came back to win the 2nd set 7-6 with a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker. That would lead to a winner take all 3rd set tiebreak where the first team to 10 with a two point lead would win the match. Malinsky/Wong would win that tiebreak 10-2 and win the match that ended Kampmann and Wong's season.
The WIAA State Team Tournament will conclude the girls' tennis season next weekend in Madison with eight Division 1 and four Division 2 teams competing. No Wausau area teams made the team state tourney.
