Baseball: Haupt, Felch lift D.C. Everest to 8th straight win in regular season finale vs. Menomonie

The D.C. Everest High School baseball team is red hot heading to the playoffs. The Evergreens finished the regular season with an 8th straight win, 2-1 over Menomonie, at Simon Field Friday afternoon. Aiden Haupt was good both on the mound and at the plate. Haupt pitched the first 5 innings and allowed just 1 run on 3 hits with no walks and 5 strikeouts. He also reached base 3 times in 3 plate appearances with 2 singles and a walk. Cade Felch, likewise, was 2 for 2 with a walk at the plate and also added an RBI.

Everest got on the board first in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Haupt led off the inning with a single and that was followed by a walk to Cole Van Slyke. Felch then singled to left and gave the Evergreens a 1-0 lead. Memomonie would respond in the top of the 3rd when Oliver Lugo tripled with one out and scored on a single by Charlie Mikesell to tie the game at 1.

It stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the 6th inning as Ryan Schulz started the inning with a single and Haupt then walked. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch and Schulz would score on a second wild pitch to give Everest the winning margin. The Mustangs did get a runner to third base with two out in the top of the 7th but Caden Allen struck out Bailey Casey looking to end the game.

Allen got the win in relief, pitching two innings of hitless ball. Everest will begin Division 1 playoff action on Tuesday when the 6th seeded Evergreens will host 11th seeded Eau Claire Memorial in a regional semifinal at Simon Field.
