Baseball: All runs scored in the first inning as Marshfield edges Wausau West

A 3 run rally with two out in the bottom of the first inning proved to be enough for Marshfield as the Tigers edged Wausau West 3-1 in a Wisconsin Valley Conference match up on Tuesday that aired live on the Wausau Area Sports YouTube channel.

All the scoring came in the 1st inning as West scored a run in the top of the 1st. Kam Blasky led off with a grounder just inside the bag at third base that led to a double. He would score on a single to center by Joe Graveen to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. It looked like that lead would hold up in the bottom of the inning as the Tigers saw their first two batters retired. A single, an error and three more singles led to three runs and a 3-1 lead for Marshfield after 1 inning.

After that it was a battle of the pitchers as both freshman John Will of Marshfield and the senior Graveen for West matched goose eggs. West tried to rally in the 7th when Alex Kapitz reached on an error and Marshal Helke followed with a pinch-hit single to put the tying run on base and lead to a pitching change. However, Jakob Sadowska was able to retire the final three batters and record the save for Will.

Joe Graveen pitched six innings for West and allowed 10 hits but no earned runs while striking out 4 and walking none in a tough luck loss. Will went 6 plus for Marshfield, allowing 1 run on 5 hits with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts. Will Stengl had a pair of hits for the Warriors, who saw a season-high three game win streak end.

West will host Marshfield in the regular season and WVC finale on Thursday. The game will again be broadcast live on the Wausau Area Sports YouTube channel with the pregame at 4:45 pm and first pitch at 5.
