The Wausau West High School girls' soccer team moved to within one win of the state tournament with a 2-0 win at Hudson in a WIAA Division 1 sectional semifinal on Thursday night in a game broadcast live on Wausau Area Sports. Saturday's sectional final vs. Kimberly in Stevens Point will be the first time Wausau West has ever competed in a sectional final in girls' soccer.
The game was scoreless until the 27th minute of the first half when Wausau West forward Ella Bohlin got around a pair of Hudson defenders and put a shot past Hudson goalkeeper Clara George to make it 1-0 Warriors. It would stay 1-0 West into the halftime intermission.
Despite Hudson pushing for the equalizer early in the second half it was West who extended their advantage at the midway point of the half. It the 60th minute, Maci Heise moved the ball to Megan Foster and Foster moved into the right hand side of the penalty area and fired a laser past George to double the Warriors' lead to 2-0.
The rest of the game the West defensive structure continue to frustrate the Raiders and finish off the victory. The win for West turned around the result of the regular season when Hudson beat the Warriors 5-1 in mid-April. It also ended a 10 game Hudson winning streak that saw the Raiders score at least 5 goals in each of those victories.
With the win, West improved their record to 12-5-3 and a sectional final vs. Kimberly. Kimberly edged Appleton North 1-0 on Thursday night to earn their spot in Saturday's game. Kimberly is 21-1 overall on the season. Saturday's game will be played at 1 p.m. at Loos Family Field on the campus of UW-Stevens Point. The game will be broadcast live on the Wausau Area Sports YouTube channel starting with the pregame at 12:45 pm.
